Get down on it

April 5, 2011

“Amusing Myself”

Facing my wine, I did not see the dusk,
Falling blossoms have filled the folds of my clothes.
Drunk, I rise and approach the moon in the stream,
Birds are far off, people too are few.

-Li Po

Forget William Carlos Williams. Rimbaud. Blake. Stevenson. This is just to say, there never would have been a modern poetry if not for Li Po (get it?? GET IT?). I thinkĀ Eliot Weinberger has written a few essays about Po, but I might be confusing him with Li Shangyin. The Tang Dynasty is sooo confusing sometimes.

Anyways, if you read even just two of Li Po’s poems, it’s pretty clear this man is not very different from you and me. He was well known for his love of liquor, and probably thought he was really creative writing drunk. One night Li Po was in a boat on the Yangtze River, and while trying to embrace the reflection of the moon in the water (???) fell from his boat and drowned. What? This is real.

Have you seen Li Po?

If you’re wondering what you can take from this, I think it’s pretty obv: the moon will not kiss back. Also, Yangtze river dolphins will not give you m2m to save your life. Oh yea, and read some GD Li Po already, we are FIVE DAYS IN to nat’l poetry month.
